Steytlerville was established in 1876 and received municipal status in 1891. It has its origins as a parish for the Dutch Reformed Church and was named after Reverend Abraham Isaac Steytler.
The town is on the R329 route in the Sarah Baartman district, forms part of the Beyers Naude Municipality in the Eastern Cape Province and is situated on the right bank of the Groot River. It is 180km northwest of Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha) and 85km east of Willowmore. Steytlerville is the North-Eastern gateway to the Baviaans mountains.
The geographical coordinates are 33° 19' 58" South, 24° 20' 41" East.
The town is surrounded by sheep and Angora goat farms and therefore we are part of the Mohair route. The sleepy town gives a sense of cohesion, calmness, safety and is known for its beauty and cleanliness.
The area around the town is perfect for photographers, hikers, cyclists, motorcyclists and bird watchers. We are blessed with two well-known artists (Zak Benjamin and Johan Trollip) and their art galleries provide a little something for all the art lovers.
We have the most beautiful rock formations that were formed millions of years ago and are a huge attraction for tourists and Archeologists.
