Rietbron
Rietbron lies on the R306, almost halfway between Beaufort West and Willowmore, and can only be reached by driving dirt roads. The town, which used to be commonly known as "Kaalplaas", was founded in 1910. The name "Rietbron" comes from the original water source which consisted of a spring covered with reeds. Rietbron owes its origin to the need of the contemporary farming community for a church, school and other social facilities. After more than 100 years, this is exactly what the town still is - a settlement that meets the most basic needs of its inhabitants. (ATM and fuel excluded). It's a very small town and farms of mainly angora goats and merino and villager sheep are the biggest job providers. Further employers are the SAPS, municipality, 2 schools, church and local shop. Smaller businesses such as a hair salon, beauty salon, physiotherapist, home industry and guest houses are open for services from time to time. The inhabitants are Afrikaans-speaking with strong religiously based moral values. The heartbeat of society are the organizations that operate here, e.g. the churches, schools, agricultural society, women's club and tennis club. The decision to place a springbok on the tower as a weather vane is a beautiful reminder of the large herds of springbok that in earlier years often traveled through the area to drink water at the fountain. It's a peaceful village with almost no crime, and the good relations between communities are characteristic. Rietbron's identity lies in its simplicity, humility and…
