Springbok
Springbok can rightly be called the capital town of Namaqualand!  The town developed on the farm Melkboschkuil around the Blue Mine, the first commercial mine in South Africa. Phillips & King have mined copper here since 1852. The town, formerly known as Springbokfontein, was surveyed in 1862 by Patrick Fletcher. This name was later shortened to Springbok. Mining in Springbok came to an end when richer copper deposits were found in the surrounding area, but by that time the town has already become a centre for farmers and travelers. Springbok continued developing and is now the centre of numerous offices, shops, and providers to farmers and mines. The town is the natural stop for those traveling to Cape Town and Namibia, the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, the Orange River, the Richtersveld, and the West Coast. Springbok is an especially favourite tourist destination during August and September when Namaqualand is decked out in her finest spring colours.
