Pella
Pella, with its jagged mountains, palm trees and the enchanting desert sky before sunset, can easily be mistaken for a distant Arabian village. The village's original attraction was the fountains, some of which still bubble today. Pella's history has been woven throughout with various missionary societies. In 1912, the London Missionary Society settled there in the area known as Cammas Fonteyn. They changed the name to Pella, after the ancient city in Macedonia, to which the persecuted Christians fled when the Romans destroyed Jerusalem. Our Pella was also a refuge for the Christians who fled from Warmbad across the Orange River in today's Namibia, where they also had to flee for their lives. Over the years, the mission station was staffed by different societies, but the last one was the Roman Catholics, who settled there in 1874 and still play a significant role in the community today. It was Fathers John Simon and Leo Wolf who built the iconic church for which Pella is known, and this with the help of an encyclopedia. It took them 7 years to complete. Additionally, it is worth noting that the final episode of the third series of the TV program Eagles was recorded outside Pella.
