Somerset East (now called KwaNojoli) is a beautiful village at the foot of the Boschberg, approximately 200km north of Port Elizabeth (now Gqeberha). It is not on the main road, but 25km from Cookhouse on the R63. This is, of course, a wonderful thing, because it makes it a quiet town with much less traffic than the ones on the main routes. The mountain provides a microclimate of much more moisture than in the rest of the Karoo villages and towns in the area. It is always a treat to stop at the green Boschberg and appreciate its beauty. There are four biomes within 20km of the town, providing variety in the landscape, with indigenous forest and grasslands on the mountain, and Karoo savannah and Karoo veldt on the plains. There are various outdoor activities to keep visitors busy, including fly fishing with Wild Fly Fishing in the Karoo and the weekly Parkrun, which can also be used as a walking route during the week.
The land around the town is incredibly fertile, and it provides for intensive farming, including sheep farming, angora goat farming, dairy farming, pig farming and citrus farming. This is made possible by the Orange-Fish River canal system, which brings water from the Gariep Dam to the Eastern Cape.
