Philippolis
Philippolis is a quaint town in South Africa's Free State Province. It is one of the closest places to the geographical center of the country. The charming village is surrounded by the stunning pyramid-shaped mountains of the Karoo. With a rich history, Philippolis was established in 1823, making it the oldest town in the Free State. The town gets its name from Dr. John Philip, a member of the London Missionary Society, who set up a mission station here. Adam Kok, a Griqua leader, played an important role in the town's early growth. Visitors can explore many historical buildings along Upper Voortrekker Street. The Victorian Jacobson Library and the Dutch Reformed Church, built in 1871, stand out. During the Anglo-Boer War, the church served as a fort. It still features the original Belgian organ. The Transgariep Museum is also on Voortrekker Street. It highlights three main themes: Dr. Philip's work, the legacy of Adam Kok, and Emily Hobhouse, who established a weaving school after the war to support Boer women through her weaving school, which began in 1905. The Laurens van der Post memorial pays tribute to a notable figure born in Philippolis in 1906. Known for his mentoring of the Prince of Wales and his friendship with Carl Gustav Jung, he earned the nickname "the white Bushman." The memorial garden reflects his belief that life is a journey, with designs symbolizing different stages of his life. The memorial centre also houses a museum room where his books are displayed,…

The memorial centre also houses a museum room where his books are displayed, as well as South Africa's first water labyrinth.

Philippolis has a unique cultural background, formed by the mix of European sailors and the indigenous Khoi-Khoi and Hottentot. The Adam Kok House, thought to be the oldest building in town, was his residence.

The town offers amongst others several accommodation options, at least three restaurants depending of the time of year, three general supermarkets, butchery and a fuel filling station.

Colin Fraser Straat. Foto bo. Kinders speel orals sokker en soggens en saans stap groepe mense saam en ry fiets. Saterdae is pretloop en Woensdae yogaklasse!
