Brandvlei is a typical small town located on the R27 and right in the middle between Calvinia and Kenhardt. According to tradition, Brandvlei got its name from a trek farmer, Ou Brand, who stopped along the Sak River with his cattle in the 19th century. The Sak River overflows into the marshes during a flood. This is possibly where the “vlei” part of the name comes from.
The Sak River is a non-permanent river and runs past Brandvlei. In 1961, the farms were cut off from the town during a major flood of the river. In some places, the river was 18 miles wide across the marshes.
