Hofmeyr's name
Hofmeyr was founded on 25 February 1874 on the farm Boorfontein. It was first named Maraisburg after Daniel Marais, who played a leading role in its establishment. To avoid confusion with Maraisburg on the Witwatersrand, the town was renamed in 1913 in honour of Jan Hendrik (Onze Jan) Homeyr, a well-known political campaigner and a staunch supporter of the establishment and development of the Afrikaans language.
