Togryers Museum

The Togryers Museum is located in the beautiful town of Ceres, about 150km from Cape Town. Here you will discover a variety of themes that give an overview of the history of the town and area. The name of the museum comes from the great influence the Togryers had on the development of Ceres, during the discovery of diamonds in Kimberley. The main route to the North passed through Ceres and equipment and building materials were transported to the diamond fields by the Train Riders.

The museum houses an impressive collection of horse and bullock carts dating back to the 1880s. The earthquake of 1969 was documented with photographs and clippings from the Cape Times, Die Burger and other newspapers. This shaking, which was felt as far as Durban, had a tremendous impact on the Valley. In December 2018, the Museum launched a new book, namely We Remember, 29 September 1969, in which local residents themselves share their experiences and also looked at the role of the army during the following months and of course, the building up of our town. If you walk further through the Museum, you will learn more about our natural history such as problem animals and birds of prey, Geology, Climate and Topography and the unique Meteor Fall of 1838 in the Koue Bokkeveld.

You can also read about the large collection of rock art from our area and the founding years of our town. We recently entered the virtual world with our Ceres Then and Now digital exhibit that you can view with the click of your computer, wherever you are. We also tell the full story of the forced shifts in Ceres and their impact on the community. However, the museum does not only strive for the preservation, exhibition and awareness of our cultural and historical heritage, but is also involved in many social projects. Our slogan, "In the community, For the community" captures the heart of the Museum. We strive to create a warm environment in which all people, whether visitors or our community, can feel safe and welcome.
