Abraham Esau monument
Abraham Esau, born around 1865 in Kenhardt, was a skilled blacksmith and transport driver in Calvinia during the Anglo-Boer War. Educated at a Methodist mission school, he was anglicized in character and had worked in various trades in Kenhardt, Prieska, and Carnarvon before settling in Calvinia. By the late 1890s, Esau became a prominent figure in the town’s coloured community. When Boer commandos began raiding the Cape Colony, Esau led coloured resistance efforts. He organized intelligence networks, drilled men, and arranged for spies in Namaqualand to relay Boer movement information to the British. Despite his efforts, the British abandoned the town's defence when Boer forces under Charles Nieuwoudt occupied Calvinia in January 1901. Esau was captured, tortured, and executed on February 5, 1901.
